Eating out at home with healthy in mind and dietary restrictions can be hard enough, but travelling adds a whole new level. So each city I visit I do my research and find the best healthy eats I can in order to avoid a relapse in my symptoms.
Every year in April we visit Singapore for the Singapore Yacht Show on Santosa Island for my partners business and each year I am finding new healthy eats to add to my favourites list.
Singapore would have to be one of the hardest places to find healthy eats that I have visited. To explain simply, I find that the restaurants try to cater for westerners but completely miss the mark. Deep-fried chicken and chips and sugar filled drinks are a little dated for the new health conscious westerner.
That brings me to the second reason I find hard to grasp in Singapore. If you have visited Singapore, you would be well aware of its reputation for late night fun with bands in every bar competing for your attention. This means that this night owl of a city is far from a morning place. Breakfast places are few and far between (other than your typical chain cafes), with most places not opening until 11am.
So with the challenges that this beautiful city has around my food requirements and schedule I have put together my top 3 healthy eats in Singapore.
Joe and The Juice – 31 Ocean Way, Sentosa Cove
Joe and The Juice was my lifesaver during one of my first visits to Singapore and I returned again this time around! This café serves fresh fruit and vegetable juices and smoothies, as well as deliciously made coffee. They also have almond milk! My favourite smoothie from Joe and The Juice is the Avo Shake made on almond milk!
Kitchen By Food Rebels – 28 Stanley St, Telok Ayer
This healthy food café was established by Wellness Coach Elika, who was frustrated with the lack of healthy options in Singapore (I hear ya!). The café prides itself on real food void of preservatives, additives, flavours, colourings or MSG. Elika also provides healthy and raw food cooking classes on site! The must try from this café is their Functional Chai Latte made on house-made almond milk! Kitchen by Food Rebels is the only place I have found in Singapore to make their almond milk from scratch!
Common Man Coffee Roasters – 22 Martin Road, Singapore
Although no almond milk here, this place has such a fresh vibe! The café is furnished with raw materials such as wood and plenty of space to enjoy your meal and coffee either alone or on a common tablet shared with others.
Common Man Coffee Roasters are one of the few places that do open early – 7am to be exact. They are open 7 days a week, serving an all day brunch menu, catering for both the plant eater and meat eater. Although they don’t particularly cater for the gluten free or dairy free person, there are plenty of options that are void of these products. I thoroughly enjoyed the Common Man Veggie Wonderland plate (minus the sourdough) with a side of fresh carrot, orange and ginger juice. These guys also have a sustainable approach to their food and drink by predominantly sourcing their ingredients locally. If you’re into yoga, you will also find a beautifully lit yoga studio upstairs.
Until next year, when I visit again to try new cafes that pop up between now and then, if you have found a healthy café in Singapore please share with us in the comments below and I will be sure to check it out during my next visit!
