A Closer Look at Complex Trauma

Not all trauma comes from a single event. Complex trauma develops from repeated or prolonged experiences, often in relationships where safety should have been: ongoing emotional neglect, family conflict, bullying, or abusive relationships. Because it builds over time, many people don’t recognise it as trauma at all.

The effects can be wide-reaching: difficulty trusting others, a harsh inner critic, feeling on edge or shut down, struggling to identify or express emotions, or repeating painful relationship patterns. Some people experience the symptoms of PTSD, while others notice it more in their sense of self and how they connect with people.

Trauma-informed psychology goes at a pace that feels safe. The early work often focuses on stabilisation and understanding your nervous system’s responses, before gently processing what happened. Learn more about how we support trauma on our PTSD page.

    Our Approach to Care

We don’t separate your mind from your body, your history from your present, or your nervous system from your symptoms. At The Wellness Emporium, holistic psychology means treating the whole person — not just the diagnosis.

Our psychologists integrate evidence-based modalities with an understanding of how lifestyle, relationships, hormones, and lived experience all shape your mental health. Because lasting change rarely comes from one angle alone.

    Therapy Approaches

Our psychologists draw from a wide range of evidence-based approaches (depending on their training and your individual needs), including:

    • Trauma-Informed Interventions (working with the body, inner child work)
    • Attachment Work
    • Mindfulness, Meditation & Body Work
    • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
    • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)
    • Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP)
    • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
    • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
    • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
    • Schema Therapy
    • Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT)
    • Solution Focused Therapy
    • Positive Psychology and Psychoeducation
    • Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
    • Motivational Interviewing
    • Gottman Method Couples Therapy
    • Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)
    • Neurodiversity-Affirming Practice
    • Trauma-Informed Practice

Spotlight: Attachment Work and Trauma-Informed Therapy

Our earliest relationships shape how we learn to feel safe, ask for support and manage emotions. Attachment-focused therapy explores these patterns, not to blame anyone, but to understand why certain situations feel so charged and to build new ways of relating. Trauma-informed practice runs alongside this: it means your psychologist pays close attention to safety, choice and pacing, and works with both the mind and the body’s stress responses. Where appropriate, this may be combined with approaches such as EMDR.

    Meet Our Psychology Team

Our psychology team brings a range of specialisations and approaches, and are experienced in supporting adults, couples, and young people across a wide range of concerns — from anxiety, trauma, and depression through to neurodiversity, relationships, and life transitions. All registered psychologists are fully registered with the Psychology Board of Australia.

To learn more about our psychologists and their individual areas of expertise, visit our psychology page.

What to Expect at Your First Psychology Appointment

During your initial appointment, your psychologist will take time to get to know you, your goals, and your concerns. Together, you will develop a plan to work towards.

Many people feel some anxiety before seeing a psychologist for the first time — that is completely normal. Our team is here to make you feel comfortable and supported from the moment you arrive. Some people find it helpful to jot down a few notes beforehand — goals, concerns, or things you have been struggling with. Come as you are. We will take it from there.

Finding the Right Psychologist for You

Choosing a psychologist is a personal decision — and the therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of positive outcomes in therapy. It can help to consider:

    • Therapeutic approach — does it align with what you’re looking for?
    • Areas of experience — does the psychologist have experience with your concerns?
    • Communication style — do you feel comfortable and heard?
    • Accessibility — are telehealth options available if you need them?

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a clinic in Broadbeach Waters?

No. Our only clinic is in Burleigh Heads, about 15 minutes south. Telehealth is also available.

What’s the difference between PTSD and complex trauma?

PTSD often follows a specific event, while complex trauma usually builds from repeated or ongoing experiences. The two can overlap, and a psychologist can help you make sense of your own experience.

Do I have to talk about everything that happened?

No. Trauma-informed therapy moves at your pace, and you stay in control of what you share and when.

Can trauma therapy be done by telehealth?

Many people do trauma-focused work online. Your psychologist will talk with you about what suits you best.

    Are your psychologists registered?

Yes — all psychologists at The Wellness Emporium are fully registered with the Psychology Board of Australia.

The Wellness Emporium is not a crisis service. If you need immediate support, please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636.
