Signs You Might Need SIBO Testing

    By Naturopath Chae | THE WELLNESS EMPORIUM | 0 comment | 29 September, 2025 | 0

Do you struggle with bloating, irregular bowel habits or unexplained gut discomfort? You’re not alone. Sometimes these symptoms point to a condition called Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), and testing could be the key to finding relief.

What is SIBO — and Why Does It Matter?

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) occurs when there is an abnormal increase in bacteria in the small intestine, an area that typically has far fewer bacteria compared to the large intestine. This imbalance can cause excessive gas production, inflammation, and impaired digestion, leading to symptoms like bloating, abdominal discomfort and pain, flatulence, belching, nausea, diarrhoea or constipation or a combination of these.

There are two common types of SIBO, based on the gases produced:

    • Hydrogen SIBO –  often linked with diarrhoea and rapid transit
    • Methane SIBO (sometimes called IMO/SIMO) –  usually associated with constipation and slower transit

Both can significantly impact your quality of life if left untreated, and are often linked with broader digestive disorders like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

    Signs You Might Have SIBO

Not everyone with bloating or digestive upset has SIBO, but some common clues include:

    • Bloating or distension that occurs soon after eating and can last for hours
    • Reflux, flatulence, belching
    • A gradual increase in abdominal swelling throughout the day – often linked with methane-producing bacteria
    • Constipation, diarrhoea, or alternating bowel patterns with no clear cause
    • Sensitivity to fibre-rich or fermentable foods like onions, garlic, beans, or cruciferous vegetables
    • Other system symptoms can include fatigue, brain fog, acne rosacea, or low iron that don’t improve with usual treatments

There are also several conditions that are associated with the risk of SIBO including IBS, IBD, Celiac Disease, H .pylori, Diabetes, Abdominal surgery, restless leg syndrome, fructose and lactose intolerance, MCAS, Fibromyalgia, Chronic pancreatitis and the list goes on.

If any of these sound familiar, it might be time to look deeper.

    When Testing Can Be Helpful

Testing for SIBO is especially useful if you:

    • Have persistent gut symptoms despite diet changes, probiotics or other general gut support
    • Experience classic symptoms such as bloating after meals that settles within an hour (often hydrogen SIBO), or worsening distension that builds all day (often methane SIBO)
    • Want to avoid unnecessary or overly restrictive diets and supplements without a clear diagnosis
    • Need clarity to guide a personalised treatment plan that targets the specific bacteria causing your symptoms

Breath testing is the standard method for SIBO diagnosis. It’s a simple, non-invasive, at-home test that measures hydrogen and methane gases produced after drinking a sugar solution. The results help identify which bacteria are overgrowing, so treatment can be tailored accordingly.

    What Happens After Testing?

If your test shows signs of SIBO, your practitioner will work with you on a targeted plan. This may include:

    • Dietary adjustments to reduce fermentable foods that feed the overgrowth
    • Herbal or prescription antimicrobials designed to reduce excess bacteria
    • Prokinetic agents to improve gut motility and prevent recurrence
    • Supportive therapies for gut healing and microbiome balance

Testing is not just about finding a label –  it’s about empowering you with clear answers and a roadmap to better gut health.

Not Everyone Needs to Test – But It Can Be a Game Changer

While SIBO testing isn’t necessary for everyone with digestive symptoms, it can be a game changer for those who have been struggling with unexplained bloating or bowel changes. Instead of guessing, testing provides clarity and guides personalised treatment that addresses the root cause – not just the symptoms.

If you’re tired of the constant discomfort and want to understand what’s really going on in your gut, SIBO testing might be the next best step on your healing journey.

    Ready to Explore Testing?

If you’re wondering whether SIBO testing is right for you, book a consultation with one of our Naturopaths. All our naturopaths are highly experienced in treating gut disorders. . We’ll review your symptoms, health history, and help decide if testing is appropriate – then guide you through the process with care and expertise. Stress has a way of becoming so normalised that we Stress has a way of becoming so normalised that we stop noticing the physical signs it's leaving behind:a tight jaw, shallow breathing, disrupted sleep, a stomach that's never quite settled.

These aren't separate, unrelated issues; they're often your nervous system's way of telling you it's been running on high alert for too long. Left unaddressed, chronic stress doesn't just affect how you feel day to day, it can genuinely impact your digestion, immunity and long-term mental health.

The good news is stress management isn't about eliminating every stressor in your life, it's about giving your nervous system real tools to come back down. Whether that looks like naturopathic support for the physical toll or working with a psychologist on what's driving it, we can help you look at both sides.

In our final video of the series, Elisha shares two major dietary tips for protecting your gut during perimenopause and menopause!

🍷 Minimize Alcohol: We hate to kill the party, but too much alcohol will negatively impact your microbiome. Minimizing it is a great step for your gut health.

🌾 Fiber is King: Pay extra attention to your diet and get as much fiber as you can tolerate. A healthy microbiome should be able to handle a wide variety of plant foods.

Struggling to tolerate certain foods? Don't just remove them! Going restrictive and removing prebiotic fibers can actually starve your good bacteria and lead to a vicious cycle of other issues. Instead, it’s crucial to investigate why your body isn't tolerating them so you can address the root cause.

Elisha is here to help you figure out exactly what is going on with your gut. She consults online so you can get expert care from anywhere.

Stress is one of those things almost everyone expe Stress is one of those things almost everyone experiences but very few people are taught how to actually manage, so a lot of misinformation fills the gap.

The truth is stress isn't just a mindset issue; it has real physiological effects on your body, and 'just push through it' is often the advice that leads to burnout rather than away from it.

On the flip side, you don't need to overhaul your entire life to feel the benefit, small, sustainable changes to how you regulate your nervous system day to day tend to make a bigger difference than dramatic, short-lived changes.

If stress has been building for a while and you're not sure where to start, that's exactly what we're here for.

Have you ever noticed that you can feel like a com Have you ever noticed that you can feel like a completely different version of yourself depending on who you are around or where you are? 🤔

We spend so much time analyzing our symptoms, our mood shifts, our anxiety spikes, our sudden dips in energy, but how often do we actually stop and look at our environment?

It’s so common to overlook the space we are in and the people we are surrounding ourselves with when we are trying to figure out why we feel a certain way. Your nervous system is constantly reading your environment. A significant difference in your mood or anxiety might not mean there is something "wrong" with you; it might just be a natural response to what is happening in your life right then and there.
How often are you pausing to check in and notice how your surroundings are actively shaping your present state?

Take a moment today to pause and ask yourself:
🌱 How does this space make me feel?
🌱 How do I feel when I am around this person?
🌱 Is my environment supporting my nervous system, or draining it?
