A Closer Look at Panic and Social Anxiety

Anxiety is a normal human response, but for some people it becomes so intense or frequent that it starts shaping their days. Panic attacks can arrive suddenly, with a racing heart, breathlessness, dizziness or a sense that something is badly wrong. Many people end up avoiding places or situations in case it happens again, and that avoidance can quietly shrink their world.

Social anxiety works differently. It centres on a strong fear of being judged, embarrassed or seen negatively by others. It can make work meetings, phone calls, social events or even ordering a coffee feel exhausting, and it’s often accompanied by replaying conversations long afterwards.

Both are well understood and respond to evidence-based psychological support. A psychologist can help you understand what’s driving the anxiety, ease the physical symptoms and gradually rebuild confidence in the situations that feel hardest. Read more on our anxiety page.

    Our Approach to Care

We don’t separate your mind from your body, your history from your present, or your nervous system from your symptoms. At The Wellness Emporium, holistic psychology means treating the whole person — not just the diagnosis.

Our psychologists integrate evidence-based modalities with an understanding of how lifestyle, relationships, hormones, and lived experience all shape your mental health. Because lasting change rarely comes from one angle alone.

    Therapy Approaches

Our psychologists draw from a wide range of evidence-based approaches (depending on their training and your individual needs), including:

    • Trauma-Informed Interventions (working with the body, inner child work)
    • Attachment Work
    • Mindfulness, Meditation & Body Work
    • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
    • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)
    • Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP)
    • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
    • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
    • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
    • Schema Therapy
    • Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT)
    • Solution Focused Therapy
    • Positive Psychology and Psychoeducation
    • Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
    • Motivational Interviewing
    • Gottman Method Couples Therapy
    • Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)
    • Neurodiversity-Affirming Practice
    • Trauma-Informed Practice

    Spotlight: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

MBSR is a structured approach that teaches you to notice thoughts, emotions and body sensations with curiosity rather than judgement. For anxiety, this can help you step out of the cycle of anticipating and bracing for panic, and respond to uncomfortable sensations without being swept along by them. Mindfulness skills are often combined with other therapies, such as CBT or ACT, so they become practical tools you can use day to day.

    Meet Our Psychology Team

Our psychology team brings a range of specialisations and approaches, and are experienced in supporting adults, couples, and young people across a wide range of concerns — from anxiety, trauma, and depression through to neurodiversity, relationships, and life transitions. All registered psychologists are fully registered with the Psychology Board of Australia.

To learn more about our psychologists and their individual areas of expertise, visit our psychology page.

What to Expect at Your First Psychology Appointment

During your initial appointment, your psychologist will take time to get to know you, your goals, and your concerns. Together, you will develop a plan to work towards.

Many people feel some anxiety before seeing a psychologist for the first time — that is completely normal. Our team is here to make you feel comfortable and supported from the moment you arrive. Some people find it helpful to jot down a few notes beforehand — goals, concerns, or things you have been struggling with. Come as you are. We will take it from there.

Psychology Services at The Wellness Emporium

    Individual Therapy for Adults

Our primary focus is supporting adults seeking individual therapy for a wide range of emotional and psychological concerns. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, trauma, relationship difficulties, burnout, or a significant life transition, our psychologists work collaboratively with you to understand what’s driving your experience and build a pathway forward that actually fits your life.

Both in-person appointments at our Burleigh Heads clinic and online telehealth sessions are available.

Support for Adolescents and Young People

Our psychologists also support adolescents and young people experiencing emotional or behavioural challenges. Therapy is tailored to developmental needs and delivered in a supportive, age-appropriate environment.

Accessing Psychology from Tweed Heads / Online

Our clinic is at 2/19 James Street, Burleigh Heads, Queensland. It’s our only in-person location, and we don’t have a clinic in Tweed Heads.

From Tweed Heads, Burleigh Heads is about a 25-minute drive north via the Pacific Motorway (M1) or the Gold Coast Highway, depending on traffic. Crossing the state border doesn’t affect your care: Medicare rebates under a Mental Health Care Plan apply in both New South Wales and Queensland.

If travelling isn’t practical, our psychologists also offer secure telehealth sessions, available anywhere in Australia.

Finding the Right Psychologist for You

Choosing a psychologist is a personal decision — and the therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of positive outcomes in therapy. It can help to consider:

    • Therapeutic approach — does it align with what you’re looking for?
    • Areas of experience — does the psychologist have experience with your concerns?
    • Communication style — do you feel comfortable and heard?
    • Accessibility — are telehealth options available if you need them?

Not sure where to start? Visit our psychology page to learn more, or call us on (07) 5535 2474.

Fees, Medicare & Private Health Rebates

Psychology appointments at The Wellness Emporium may be eligible for Medicare rebates under a Mental Health Care Plan (from your GP), as well as private health fund rebates, WorkCover, NDIS, and EAP sessions. You do not need a referral to book — however, a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP is required to access Medicare rebates.

For full fee information and current rebate amounts, visit our psychology page or call us on (07) 5535 2474.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a clinic in Tweed Heads?

No. Our only clinic is in Burleigh Heads, Queensland, about 25 minutes north. Telehealth is also available.

I live in NSW. Can I still claim Medicare?

Yes. Medicare is national, so a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP works the same whichever side of the border you live on.

What does a panic attack feel like?

Common signs include a pounding heart, shortness of breath, chest tightness, dizziness, tingling and an intense sense of fear. Because these can overlap with medical conditions, it’s worth checking in with your GP too.

Can social anxiety be treated online?

Yes. Many people find telehealth a comfortable way to start, and it can be part of building confidence over time.

    Are your psychologists registered?

Yes — all psychologists at The Wellness Emporium are fully registered with the Psychology Board of Australia.

The Wellness Emporium is not a crisis service. If you need immediate support, please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636.
