HOW TO MAKE A NATURAL BODY SCRUB

HOW TO MAKE A NATURAL BODY SCRUB

    By Naturopath Chae | THE WELLNESS EMPORIUM | 0 comment | 17 December, 2018 | 0

I can’t go past making my own natural body scrub! I can’t remember the last time I bought a body scrub. Making your own body scrub is simple to do and very affordable. And the best part, is that you can custom make it by adding in your favourite essential oil. I often make these up in batches and give them to my friends and family for presents!

This scrub is a great exfoliant for the shower, which leaves your skin revitalized, soft and glowing. The added benefits of using coconut oil is that it is also an antibacterial and antifungal.

The Recipe (to make 1 cup of scrub)

    • ¾ of a cup of fine Himalayan rock salt
    • ¼ of a cup of raw sugar
    • ½ of a cup of coconut oil
    • 20 drops of an essential oil of your choice for added health benefits and a beautiful smell (I used sweet orange)
    • 1 glass jar – minimum 250ml

    The Method:

    • Mix all ingredients in a glass bowl and add 20 drops of your favourite essential oil – scoop into your chosen glass jar. If your glass jar is a little bigger then 250ml you can also mix all the ingredients in the jar – saving clean up time.

    Use:

    • Apply to wet skin while you are in the shower and rinse off. Do not apply to the face.

    Tips:

    • Use glass to avoid the essential oils absorbing into the plastic
    • You can even mix up the ingredients by doing half sugar and half Himalayan rock salt. Sugar is less abrasive, so the more Himalayan rock salt the harsher the scrub will be
    • Variations: You can add cinnamon, coffee and different types of oils to play with the smell

    xXx

💧 Ever stopped to think about what’s actually 💧 Ever stopped to think about what’s actually in your tap water?

I know it seems fine, but most tap water contains things like chlorine, fluoride, microplastics and even heavy metals. And yep that can mess with your gut, hormones, and how well your body detoxes.

One of the easiest and most impactful changes I’ve made on my low-tox journey was switching to a good water filter. It’s such a simple swap, but it’s had a huge impact — not just for me, but for the whole family.

If you’re trying to reduce your toxic load, support your gut, or just make better choices at home, this is honestly one of the best places to start. Small steps really do add up. 👣💙

It’s easy to overlook, but getting regular sun e It’s easy to overlook, but getting regular sun exposure can do more than lift your mood, it plays a key role in how your immune system functions.

When sunlight hits your skin, your body begins to make vitamin D. This isn’t just about bone health — vitamin D is essential for helping immune cells like T-cells and macrophages do their job. These are the frontline defenders that help your body fight off infections.

Sunlight also helps regulate inflammation and supports a more balanced immune response. Research has even shown that people with regular sun exposure tend to experience fewer infections and enjoy better overall well-being.

Of course, moderation matters. The goal isn’t to tan — it’s to give your body just enough UVB rays to stimulate vitamin D production without damaging your skin.

So how do you get it right?

☀️ Aim for 10–30 minutes of sun a few times a week — adjust for skin tone and season
🕙 Midday is best for vitamin D
💊 In low-sun months, or if you’re mostly indoors, speak with your practitioner about vitamin D supplements

If you’re constantly feeling tired, catching bugs more often, or experiencing low mood during winter, it may be worth checking your vitamin D levels.

As a naturopath living with ulcerative colitis, I’ve learned that taking a holistic approach to gut health is key. Here are my 5 daily gut health hacks that help me manage my gut and stay in balance:

Rebounder 🏃‍♀️
Jumping on a rebounder (mini trampoline) helps stimulate lymphatic flow, improve gut motility, and support overall circulation. It gets the body moving without putting too much strain on it! Aim for 3-5 minutes 1-2 times per day

Castor Oil Packs 🌿
I apply a castor oil pack over my abdomen to reduce inflammation and support digestion. It’s been a game-changer for relieving discomfort and promoting gut healing. (Pro tip: add heat for added benefits!)

Abdominal Massage 💆‍♀️
Gentle abdominal massage helps stimulate the digestive system, encourage detoxification, and eases bloating. I use slow, circular motions to help reduce tension and support gut function.

Mindful Eating 🍽
I take time to slow down and truly connect with my food. This practice helps improve digestion, supports better nutrient absorption, and allows me to enjoy the meal rather than rush through it.

Potty Squatty 🚽
Yes, it’s as simple as it sounds! Squatting on the toilet, or using a stool to elevate your feet, can help align the body for a more natural, effective bowel movement. It’s a small adjustment that can make a big difference!

These small, simple daily practices have been essential for my gut health journey. 🌱

Still feeling flat weeks after getting sick?
You’re not alone, and you’re not imagining it.

For many people, the real recovery starts after the symptoms fade. Even when the fever’s gone or the cough stops, your body may still be repairing from the inside out.

When we’re unwell, our immune system goes into overdrive. That creates inflammation, depletes our cellular energy (especially the mitochondria — your cells' “batteries”), and leaves us more sensitive to stress and fatigue. Add in poor sleep or a nutrient-light diet, and it's no wonder you feel wiped out long after you’re technically “better”.

So what now? Recovery isn’t about pushing through. It’s about slowing down and giving your body what it needs to restore itself.

You don’t need to do it all at once. Just pick one or two habits to lean into consistently. Over time, these small efforts can make a big shift in how you feel day to day.

💬 Still feeling the effects after a virus or flu? Your body might be telling you it’s time to slow down. Don't forget we offer immune consult packages with our naturoapths to boost your immune system quickly!

There are a lot of gut supplements out there, but There are a lot of gut supplements out there, but not all of them are right for your body. Here are 3 common gut supplements I avoid and why:
Magnesium Oxide
While magnesium is essential for gut health, Magnesium Oxide is poorly absorbed by the body. It can act as a laxative and may cause diarrhea, discomfort, and isn’t the best at supporting overall magnesium levels. When it comes to your gut Magnesium Citrate is my go-to instead, as it is better absorbed and works gently for my constipated clients.

Broad-Spectrum Probiotics
Not all probiotics are created equal. Broad-spectrum probiotics containing multiple strains can sometimes exacerbate imbalances in your gut, especially if you’re dealing with issues like SIBO. It's better to personalise your probiotics based on your unique gut needs – there is specific strains for specific issues.

Herbal Laxatives
Though they offer short-term relief for constipation and in very rare cases I might recommend them (as 99% of the time my other tools work alot better without the need), laxatives like Cascara or Senna can lead to dependency. Our focus is on correcting the functional cause ultimately supporting healthy bowel movements long-term.
Remember, the key to gut health is understanding what your body really needs and often that is investigation 🌱

Feeling run down more often than you'd like? It’ Feeling run down more often than you'd like?
It’s probably not just bad luck. Your immune system might be asking for more support, and the good news is, there are simple, daily habits that can make a big difference.

Start with what’s on your plate. Whole foods like berries, leafy greens, eggs, and fatty fish give your body the vitamins and antioxidants it needs to fight off bugs. On the flip side, ultra-processed snacks high in sugar can drag your defences down.

Sunlight matters too. Just 10–30 minutes daily helps your body make vitamin D, a key nutrient for immune health, especially important if you work indoors or feel flat during winter.

Prioritise proper sleep. While you rest, your immune system resets. Aim for 7–9 hours per night. If you're constantly tired or catching every cold going around, this could be a missing piece.

Movement doesn't have to mean smashing the gym. Even a 15-minute walk, stretching session, or light dance at home supports immune function by reducing stress and boosting circulation.

And of course, hydrate. Around 2 litres of filtered water per day helps your system flush toxins and carry nutrients effectively.

Feeling like you’ve tried everything? Herbal options like Echinacea or andrographis may offer extra support. These can be great during colder months or when you're under stress—but always chat to your practitioner before adding anything new.

Small, consistent changes beat extreme fixes. Give your immune system a chance to thrive, not just survive.

Many of our clients are just like you, they’ve b Many of our clients are just like you, they’ve been down the mainstream medicine route, had all the tests, and been told “everything looks normal.”

And yes, it’s important to rule out serious diseases like ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s, bowel disease, or cancer - but if those aren’t present, then what?

You’re left with a label like IBS… but why? What’s causing your bloating, pain, or irregular bowel movements? That’s the real question.

The difference? Main stream medicine is often looking for disease states, while as naturopaths, we look for imbalances in function because that’s where the real answers lie.

This is why we use functional testing such as gut microbiome stool testing, SIBO breath testing and Intestinal Permeability (IP) Tests. When clients come to us with gut issues, we take the time to:
🔎 Delve deep into your symptoms and history
📂 Assess past test results
🧪 Recommend functional tests like stool testing, Intestinal Permeability Urine testing or SIBO breath testing to uncover the root cause (depending on your symptoms, it is important not all stool tests are the same and we use a variety depending on our clients symptoms)

Your gut is talking to you. Are you ready to listen?

Contact our team today to book a 1:1 with one of our naturopaths or head to our testing package page if you already know what you want!

Your immune system doesn’t need to be “boosted Your immune system doesn’t need to be “boosted”, it needs to be balanced.

Let’s talk essentials, the things that quietly shape how well your body handles stress, illness, and recovery.

☀️ Vitamin D plays a key role in regulating immune response. Many people, especially indoors or in winter, aren’t getting enough. Low levels? You might notice more fatigue, inflammation, or slower recovery.

🍊 Vitamin C is your daily go-to for immune cell function. It helps your body respond effectively, especially during and after stress or infection.

🛡️ Zinc supports everything from wound healing to immune cell communication. A small deficiency can have big effects, especially on how well you fight off or recover from common bugs.

🦠 Gut Health Support - about 70% of your immune cells live in your gut. When your gut’s in balance, your immune response is too.

😮‍💨 Stress, sleep & movement round out the essentials.
Too much stress can suppress immune function. Poor sleep messes with how your body recovers. And while movement is great for your immune health, overtraining without proper rest can backfire.

Immune support doesn’t come from one miracle supplement. It’s daily, steady care — through food, rest, and lifestyle.

Thinking of reviewing your essentials? Start here. Talk with a qualified naturopath to personalise what your body may need.

🚫 So you’ve seen the craze about parasite cleanness right? And how they promise to fix you IBS? Before you grab that bottle, let's have a chat! 🌿

Parasite cleanses can be tempting, but here’s the thing: these herbs are pretty damn powerful, and using them without knowing if you actually have a parasite or pathogenic bacteria (or which herbs are best for your gut) can do more harm than good. They might actually irritate your gut lining, leading to even more discomfort and acutally cause further dysbiosis (yep thats right, and that well researched!) 😬 And remember, if your gut lining is already compromised (hello, leaky gut), a parasite cleanse won't fix the underlying problem. It's like putting a band-aid on a broken bone!

Instead, the focus should be on healing and repairing your gut first (and if you actually do have parasites or pathogenic bacteria overgrowth - this is when we look at individualised herbs that are best suited for you and that do NO harm). A happy, healthy gut is the key to overall well-being.

oh and a little side note - most parasites arent actually bad, take blastocystis for example - it actually can only live in a healthy gut ;)

So, how can we help? We now offer gut testing and naturopathic consult packages which can now be purchased online via our website - Want more info? DM “GUT TEST” - This way, you can have your test results ready before your first appointment. 📝

If you're unsure about where to start and want personalised guidance from our gut specialist naturopaths, book an initial consult. We'll dive into your health history, discuss your current signs and symptoms, and set goals to create the best plan for you including functional test recommendations based on this information.
